To Those I Serve,
As a young man, I loved spending time with my grandfather. Blissfully unaware, I didn’t realize back then the impact his mentorship would have as I defined my character and determined my path in this world.
To me, my grandfather was the embodiment of cool – an adventurer and an innovator who could make or fix almost anything. Despite only completing five grades, he never stopped acquiring knowledge and never missed the opportunity to take on a new challenge. The lessons he instilled in me were not those learned in books, but rather those learned by nurturing relationships.
At the age of eleven, I began working beside my grandfather on our family farm. I first raised flowers and tended fruit trees, later graduating to repairing engines and mending fences. Through it all, he was my patient instructor and my committed supporter.
Reflecting on these memories, I can recall very little about water pumps and welding, but I clearly remember what he taught me about hard work, integrity, and generosity. The care he extended to each person he met was evidenced in his ability to listen and build deep friendships based on mutual respect.
It comes as no surprise that this informal education became the foundation of my life. My time on the farm established a connection between the rewards we reap and the effort we invest. If my grandfather were alive today, I know he would be proud of me for taking his wisdom and applying it to my role as an advisor, an ambassador, and an advocate for you.
